ABOUT US

In April 2016, Carolyn Wheeler was thinking about the change going on in her life and realized that one of the things that was missing after both retiring and becoming an "empty-nester" was the wonderful sense of community that had surrounded her during her child-rearing and working years.  With that, she thought to start a group and sent out the following letter to see about the interest level amongst her friends and acquaintances.  And from this, A.LI.V.E. was born!
The Journey Continues...
"Life's a Journey, Enjoy the Ride"
"Life's a Journey, Not a Destination"
"Life's a Journey, Not a Race"
Life's a Journey, and it's Just Beginning"
For those of us who are now "empty-nesters" and either retired or nearing retirement and trying to figure out our next steps in life, it has suddenly occurred to me that Life is a Journey, and we have only begun!  For some it means going back to work, for others it's throwing ourselves into doing good and for others it's exploring the world.  It dawned on me, why not have a group of fun, well-educated, adventurous women to figure out this path and share in the journey.
My vision is to on a relatively regular basis get together and explore the world in whatever capacity that might be.  Some of the things that this "club" might entertain over the course of a year would comprise a bit of the following:
  • Social - In today's fast-paced, impersonal world wouldn't it be meaningful and gratifying to get together with some good friends and like-minded women to share in our concerns, challenges and successes?  It might be over coffee or on a walk in the woods with our dogs.  But the point is to make the time for each other!
  • Giving Back - As we get older we both have the time and inclination to give back.  This could mean a lot of different things to different people, so wouldn't it be fun to jointly pick projects together and then execute them together.  We have a lot of brain power to be shared!  We are also at a time that a lot of flexibility is becoming more and more important, so projects are a perfict fit versus serving on boards or being behind the scenes.
  • Entertainment/Cultural - I don't know if you're like me, but we have a wealth of cultural opportunities available to us whether in NYC or our area, and I find myself often not taking advantage of it.  Wouldn't it be fun to have a calendar of events scheduled from which to choose?  Sometimes we might bring our spouses or significant others along, other times it might be our children, and then sometimes it might just be our gaggle of women!
  • Travel/Adventure - As some of you know, my lifetime passion has been seeing the world and really diging into the cultures.  Wouldn't it be fun to have an exciting annual trip to which to look forward?
Intitially I see this as a group of 25+/-, but time will tell if this is the correct number.  In my opinion a small committee would be involved in the planning and the rest can just participate as they see fit and as their schedules allow.  Certainly there would never be an obligation to participate and bringing along a friend would always be welcome!
So girls, what do you think??
